I had the opportunity to check out the new Drive In Movie Theater in Havelock Ontario. The Havelock Family Drive In is family owned and operated and has also given part time job possitions for the summer. The Drive in Is located North on Concession Rd 11 in Havelock (The West Side of Havelock). You do not have to drive too far up Concession 11 to get to the Drive in.
When we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff who asked how we heard about the Drive In. They are trying to spread the word that the Drive in has just opened for business and will offer movies all summer. The Cost to get in is $11 per person over the age of 12. Ticket prices include tax as does the concession stand food. They do not take debit so make sure to bring cash. The Drive in has space for 75 cars. The Concession booth offers Pop corn, hot dogs, french fries, burgers, fresh cotton candy, ice cream, nachos and more. The prices are very reasonable and much cheaper than the movie theaters. The food is excellent too, I had a large poutine for only $5.50 and my husband had a burger for only $4.50. The First Movie starts right as soon as it gets dark. So at approximately 9:15 pm.
The Havelock Drive in had issues getting a permit to operate durring the last few years because Havelock’s Reeve had many concerns. One person who lives near the Drive In complained that it would produce a lot of noise and light. There are not many homes near the Drive In. The Reeve had concerns about traffic flow, late operations, noise and lighting issues. The cars face away from any residentail area so car headlights should not be an issue (Because people are encouraged to turn cars on during intermission to recharge battery). 75 cars is not a crazy amount of traffic, and it does not nessesarily mean that the Drive in will be full every night on the weekend. There is no noise issues as volume is inside cars and when you leave your car you can barely hear anything. The only lights are the screen and the solar lights which both do not give off strong light. Nobody has gotten loud or rowdy after hours and in fact most people who attended had children and left as soon as the movies were over. I do not see why the Havelock Reeve has such grave concerns over a business that will bring tourism into the town! This is much needed, it gives people something to do on summer weekend nights. There are far worse things people can be doing on weekends such as going to the bar or heaven forbid stand in the Tim Horton’s Parking lot at 2am with 20 friends just loitering loudly. Tim Horton’s causes noise, light pollution and traffic yet the people who reside right beside the Drive thru had no say when it came to building the Tim Horton’s. Also if ANYTHING causes traffic and too much noise it’s the Havelock Jambouree and it causes more than just Noise and Traffic it causes much chaos during that one weekend in August, but yet Ontario’s biggest Country Music fest is still held in Havelock.
The Movies that were being played this weekend were Thor and Rango. Kid’s movies are played first. We took our 5 year old daughter and she barely got through Rango before she fell asleep. The Drive in is great family fun, you don’t need a baby sitter and you don’t have to worry about your kids disturbing everyone as they are in the car. The only inconvienience I faced was the fact the car windows fogged up when we brought hot food into the car, we cracked the windows open and had a Mosquito problem. We have decided to make a magnetic screen for the car windows as we hope to go see most of the movies the Drive in is offering this summer.
The Movies that are comming soon are X-Men, Transformers 3, Cars 2, Winnie the Pooh movie, Brides maids, Tree of Life, Harry Potter and the Deathly hallows (Which we are TRYING to talk them into playing BOTH parts one and 2 for that weekend) Captain America, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Cowboys and Aliens. It is a good summer movie line up and best of all you get to see 2 movies for the price of one! Have a lot of kids under the age of 12? No problem, they get in free! Need something to do when your kid has a few friends over for a sleep over? Head on over to the drive in!
I am giving 2 thumbs up to the Havelock Family Drive in. Friendly staff, great movies, good food and really fun atmosphere.
